Why we chose OPNSense
OPNSense is a mature and feature-rich firewall and routing platform, with enterprise support available from Deciso, the company behind it, at a reasonable cost.
For us, it made sense as it fulfills an important list of requirements:
- Free and Open-Source
- Supports advanced security features such as packet scanning
- Has a rich ecosystem of plugins to allow us to use it as a load balancer, HTTP server, VPN
- Has built-in support for Master/Slave configuration which is necessary for us to achieve a fully Highly Available setup
- Has a good license that allows us to redistribute it, support it, and improve it with its great community
- Has hardware support for many robust appliances and almost any x86_64 computer
Its main drawback was that its API is really poor, so we worked hard on our own OPNSense-Config Harmony crate to allow for seamless integration. This crate focuses on providing the features Harmony needs from OPNSense in the most correct and robust way.
We do have plans to create a great opnsense-cli based on this crate as we don't know of better OPNSense automation tools at this moment.
